US President Donald Trump announced on Monday, March 23, 2026, that he has instructed the Department of Defense to postpone all planned military strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days, following what he described as “very good and productive conversations” with Tehran.

In a post written in all capitals on his Truth Social platform early Monday, Trump stated: “The United States and Iran have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East. Based on the tenor and tone which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings.”

The announcement comes amid the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict, now in its fourth week, which has seen intense airstrikes, missile exchanges, drone attacks on diplomatic and energy facilities across the Gulf, and significant disruption to global oil markets (Brent crude hovering above $118/barrel).

Trump did not provide details on the nature, location, or participants in the discussions. Earlier on Sunday, he had claimed the US was “talking to them” but said Iran was “not ready” for a deal. Tehran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi had rejected those claims, insisting there were no negotiations and that Iran was only defending itself.

The five-day pause is conditional on the progress of talks continuing this week. Trump added that “nobody even knows who you’re dealing with” due to the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and many senior officials in the initial strikes, but reiterated that Tehran “want[s] to make a deal badly.”

Iran: No immediate official response from Tehran to Trump’s Monday announcement. State media has maintained that Iran’s actions remain defensive and that talks would only be possible if aggression ceases.

Israel: Yet to comment publicly. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant had previously stated that any Iranian leader continuing threats against Israel would remain a target.

Global Markets: Oil prices dipped slightly on the news of the pause but remain elevated amid uncertainty over whether the truce will hold.

The development represents the first public indication of direct diplomatic engagement since the conflict escalated on February 28, 2026, though both sides continue to issue hardline statements.
