Scheduled for Thursday, October 24, in Abuja, the hearing is aimed at discussing the growing concerns over electricity disruptions and grid instability, as mandated by the Electricity Act 2023.
NERC expressed alarm over the rising number of grid collapses, noting that the country experienced three failures in the past week alone, on October 14, 15, and 19, bringing the total number of collapses in 2024 to eight. These failures have undermined progress made in stabilizing Nigeria’s electricity supply.
The outages have caused significant disruptions across the nation, prompting widespread frustration among citizens and businesses.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu attributed the frequent grid collapses to aging infrastructure and underscored the need for increased investment in modernizing the power sector. He also emphasized the importance of decentralizing the national grid to isolate local failures and prevent them from triggering nationwide outages.
The public hearing, open to all stakeholders and the public, will be held at the NERC headquarters at 10 a.m. It will offer a platform for discussions on possible solutions and the necessary investments to prevent future grid failures.
