In a sweeping move that has sent shockwaves through Ebonyi State’s political landscape, Governor Francis Nwifuru has suspended over 86 government officials, including commissioners, special advisers and assistants, over what he described as a “humiliating betrayal” of his leadership and the ruling party’s unity.

The dramatic decision followed the poor attendance of these officials at a high-profile rally in Abakaliki to endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Sources within the state government claim the governor was “visibly embarrassed” by the scant turnout, especially as the rival opposition coalition, popularly known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), successfully launched a massive mobilization campaign that drew large crowds.

Insiders allege the governor is now suspicious that there may be political moles within his cabinet who are secretly sympathizing with or even funding the opposition through covert channels while posing as loyalists.

This development marks a tense escalation in Ebonyi State’s political atmosphere, as Governor Nwifuru seeks to reassert control ahead of anticipated political realignments in the Southeast.

A statement released Monday night by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, confirmed the suspensions, citing “gross dereliction of duty” and a “failure to attend a major state function.”
