These explosions reportedly resulted in injuries and substantial property damage, raising significant safety concerns about CNG, a recently promoted renewable energy alternative in Nigeria.
In response, SON has committed to heightened regulatory oversight to ensure the safe implementation of CNG across the country.

The organization emphasized that only certified equipment and conversion kits meeting stringent safety standards will be approved for public use.
SON’s statement also stressed the importance of public vigilance, urging users to verify the certification status of CNG cylinders and other related components to prevent further accidents.
This proactive step underscores SON’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property amidst the country’s push toward renewable energy solutions.

“Our conformity assessment schemes are designed to prevent the import, manufacture, and use of substandard products,” the organisation said.
SON also highlighted its collaboration with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and other government agencies to develop the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS). This new platform will enable centralized monitoring of CNG systems, ensuring that only vehicles fitted with certified conversion kits can refuel at gas stations.

The NGVMS will also maintain a database of certified CNG equipment and suppliers, which SON says will help reduce risks linked to substandard installations. The organization hopes this system will improve safety and provide greater oversight in the growing CNG sector.
