Yesterday, the presentation of the 2025 budget estimates of N48.7 trillion by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the National Assembly started on a dramatic note. Dramatic because the President mistakenly referred to the 10th National Assembly as the 11th National Assembly.

While some have rushed to label this a gaffe, a closer examination reveals a display of wit, intelligence, and strategic political acumen that speaks volumes about President Tinubu’s leadership style.

Anyways, the lawmakers corrected him by shouting “10th Assembly,”but the President did not even shy away from the moment. What he did instead? He responded with poise and humor, saying, “I wrote ‘11th.’” And there was further laughter. Before this could subside, he added with a smile, “That means you are all re-elected,” an off – the – cuff remark that instantly endeared him to the lawmakers and even elicited cheers and applause. This wasn’t just a recovery but a masterstroke of political charm.

For me, what stood out was the President’s refusal to shift blame. Unlike many leaders who might deflect responsibility onto speechwriters or aides, Tinubu owned the error outright. He said, “I wrote ‘11th.’” That simple statement was a display of leadership – he did not make excuses or pass the buck. This is a leader with his hands firmly on the plow, a man who takes responsibility for his actions, no matter the consequences.

Don’t forget that we are in an era where many leaders hide behind layers of bureaucracy but not President Tinubu. His authenticity was refreshing. His hand gestures, tone, and confident demeanor projected honesty, telling of a leader who is both self-aware and unpretentious.

Beyond honesty, Tinubu demonstrated remarkable mental agility. His witty comeback, “That means you are all re – elected,” not only diffused the situation but also turned it into an opportunity to strengthen his relationship with the lawmakers. This wasn’t the response of someone caught off guard – it was a deliberate and strategic move. It tells of his ability to think on his feet and transform a potential misstep into a moment of camaraderie and goodwill.

I think such a display of quick thinking is no accident; it simply confirms that we have a leader who is politically astute and always a step ahead. Tinubu’s response was more than humor – some say it was a campaign statement, a prophetic wish for the lawmakers’ success in their political futures, and a testament to his mastery of political strategy.

Meanwhile, some critics have suggested that the entire incident was staged, a calculated move to win the favor of both chambers. For me, let’s even assume without conceding that this was the case, it would only underscore Tinubu’s brilliance as a political strategist. Crafting a moment that unites lawmakers from different divides while showing off his charm and intelligence is no small feat.

In fact, some others have interpreted his remark as a veiled endorsement of the lawmakers’ reelection aspirations. While Tinubu is not the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine their political futures, his statement was more about goodwill and encouragement. It was a wish for their continued success, which tells of his ability to inspire loyalty and confidence among his colleagues. I think he should be commended.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo could be homorous but I do not think any Nigerian president in recent memory has enjoyed such a warm and collaborative relationship with the National Assembly. Tinubu’s ability to connect with lawmakers across party lines is a testament of his political genius and his understanding of the importance of synergy between the executive and legislative arms of government.

And so, turning a potential misstep into a moment of unity, Tinubu simply reminded us of his reputation as a leader who is not just prepared for the challenges of governance but is also deeply attuned to the nuances of political engagement. His charm, wit, and strategic foresight set him apart as a leader who not only commands respect but also inspires genuine admiration.

Tinubu’s response showed a leader who is authentic, quick-thinking, and deeply connected to the political pulse of the nation. Whether intentional or spontaneous, the moment reflected the character of a leader who is always prepared to turn challenges into opportunities.
