The impeachment of Obasa was attributed to multiple financial and statutory violations during his tenure. In response to his removal, the Assembly also appointed Mojeed Adebola as the new Deputy Speaker and dissolved all principal positions and standing committees to signal a fresh start for the legislative body.
Upon assuming office, new Speaker Meranda moved into the speaker’s office accompanied by members of the House. The Assembly complex saw heightened security during this transition. A scheduled plenary session was deferred to a later date to allow for better organization.
These developments indicate a significant shift in the leadership dynamics of the Lagos State House of Assembly, with members expressing confidence in Speaker Meranda’s ability to lead the House effectively.
However, embattled former speaker Obasa returned from vacation holding claim that he’s still the rightful speaker, faulting his impeachment on multiple grounds. Following spirited moves all over, the members of the Assembly and the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) met severally to determine how to make sense of the matter. Consequently, they have settled for the speakership of RT Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, said a source who spoke to DDNEWS.
After ratifying the sack of Obasa, the two prominent groups reached a decision support call for a new speaker and suggested Lagos West be allowed to produce the new speaker, resolutely rallying behind RT Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda
Sources disclosed that the GAC members who were looking for soft landing for the former speaker Obasa were surprised when Lagos West members and others rejected the idea of a his return in an interregnum pact.

Defiantly, majority of the House Members said an unequivocal ‘No!’ to the idea of a new speaker outside Hon. Meranda
Later, the Lagos West members met, deliberating behind closed doors and came out to inform that they are in support of the continuation of RT Hon Mojisola Meranda as speaker.
For now, it seems that the days of long knives are over but again, this is politics, a game were alliances shift like a pack of cards, in unexpected ways and directions.
