In a remarkable display of unity, Nigeria’s major political parties cum leading politicians kept politics aside and converged in Daura, hometown, to pay their last respects to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13, 2025, in London, United Kingdom.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and opposition Parties comprising the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the latest political bride in town, African Democratic Congress (ADC), represented by notable figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and their supporters, were in the ancient town of Daura to identify with the family and the people of the State during this solemn period of national mourning.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died at the age of 82. He had served Nigeria, both as a military head of state (1984–1985) and a democratically elected president (2015–2023), leaving behind a legacy of uncommon service to fatherland.
The burial ceremony which was carried out according to Muslim rites, held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, marked by a profound sense of reverence and solidarity, transcending political divides.

President Bola Tinubu, who succeeded Buhari under the APC banner, led the nation in mourning, declaring a seven-day period of national mourning and a public holiday on the day of the burial. Tinubu, alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, received Buhari’s body at Katsina airport, where it was flown in from London. The body was then transported to Daura for interment within the grounds of his family compound.
Notable figures from across Nigeria’s political spectrum who attended the ceremony, included Buhari’s former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi who served under Buhari’s government as Minister of Transportation. Amaechi, adorned a traditional turban reflecting his Katsina state chieftaincy title “Dan Amanar Daura” (Trusted Son of Daura). The former governor of Sokoto state, Right Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, Senators Tunde Ogbeha, Nuhurudeen Abatemi and several other personalities attended the event.
At the funeral proceedings, many people gathered at Daura’s central mosque for Islamic prayers, while 21 military gunshots fire heralded the farewell tribute. The Nigerian flag which had been draped over Buhari’s body was folded and presented to his family, led by his widow, Aisha Buhari, amidst tears and prayers.
In his tribute, President Tinubu, described Buhari as a “core patriot, soldier, and statesman” whose legacy of discipline and service would endure. Despite criticisms of his administration, particularly over economic challenges and insecurity, Buhari’s reputation for personal integrity and his historic 2015 election victory, where for the first time an opposition candidate defeated an incumbent in Nigeria, were widely acknowledged accomplishment.

While former President Goodluck Jonathan, whom Buhari succeeded, called his death a “significant personal and national loss”, his military compatriot and former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida praised him as a “moral compass” and symbol of modesty.
As Daura witnessed an unprecedented convergence of political rivals, traditional rulers and ordinary citizens, the event highlighted Buhari’s enduring legacy as a unifying figure in Nigeria’s complex political landscape.
