The Nigerian gospel music community is in deep mourning following the death of renowned singer and evangelist Bunmi Akinnanu Adeoye, popularly known as Bunmi Omije Ojumi, who passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at a hospital in Lagos.
Her family confirmed the sad news in a statement shared on Tuesday by colleague Ayo Melody on Instagram: “With great sadness we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnanu Adeoye (OMIJE OJUMI), who passed away on 12th January 2026 at a Lagos hospital in Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest.”
Bunmi, aged around 46, had been battling a serious leg ailment since late 2025. She publicly appealed for prayers during a church service in Ibadan in October, where she was seen with her leg elevated and receiving divine intervention. Though the exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed, it followed months of health struggles.
Known for her powerful worship anthem “Omije Ojumi” (Tears of My Eyes), which became a staple in churches and Christian homes across Nigeria, Bunmi began her music journey at the age of 10. She later left a successful banking career to pursue gospel music full-time, releasing several impactful tracks and leading the Omije Ojumi Gospel International Music Band.

Her emotional last known interview resurfaced hours after the announcement, in which she spoke candidly about her rise from poverty, attending church in rags and bathroom slippers, and her resilience through trials. The clip has added to the outpouring of grief and tributes.
Tributes have poured in from fellow gospel artistes, fans, and the Christian community, remembering her as a voice of inspiration, faith, and encouragement.
