In a statement issued by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the government described the team’s journey as “inspiring” and a source of national pride, even though the campaign ended short of the final.

“The Federal Government salutes the gallant Super Eagles for their fighting spirit, discipline, and commendable showing at AFCON 2025. The team fought with heart, unity, and patriotism, bringing joy to millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora,” the minister said.

He acknowledged the narrow margin of the loss to a formidable Moroccan side backed by home advantage, noting that “football is a game of fine margins, and the Super Eagles gave everything until the final whistle.”

Nigeria’s campaign has been impressive, with an unbeaten run through the group stage and quarter-finals, a tournament-leading 14 goals scored before the semi-final, and standout performances from key players like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, and a solid defense led by William Troost-Ekong.

Minister Enoh assured the team of the government’s continued support, promising improved welfare, better preparation infrastructure, and sustained investment in youth development to build on the momentum created at AFCON 2025.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who followed the tournament closely, also conveyed personal congratulations to the players, technical crew led by Eric Chelle, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for representing the country with honour.
Nigerians nationwide have echoed the praise, with social media filled with messages of appreciation and calls for the team to remain focused ahead of future competitions, including World Cup qualifiers.
