The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the appointment of Justice Joseph Oyewole, Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

This recommendation is part of a larger list of 36 judicial nominees approved by the NJC for various courts across the federation in 2026, the Council announced on Wednesday, January 15, 2026.
The NJC, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, approved the list during its 108th meeting held on January 14–15, 2026.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, for appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of former Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. The recommendation is part of a broader set of judicial appointments, including 27 judges for State High Courts across seven states, six Kadis for Sharia Courts of Appeal, and two judges for the Customary Court of Appeal in Delta State
The NJC stated that the nominees underwent rigorous screening, interviews, and background checks to ensure integrity, competence, and suitability for elevation.
The recommendations now await confirmation by the President and the Senate, as required by the Constitution.
Justice Oyewole, a seasoned jurist with extensive experience in appellate adjudication, is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished appellate judges in Nigeria. His elevation would strengthen the Supreme Court’s bench amid ongoing efforts to clear the backlog of cases and enhance judicial efficiency.

This is the first major set of judicial appointments recommended by the NJC in 2026, following the swearing-in of new CJN Kekere-Ekun and the reconstitution of the Council.
