The Supreme Court of Nigeria has dismissed the appeal filed by Ibrahim Muhammad Badaru, son of former Jigawa State Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, thereby upholding his conviction for failing to declare $40,000 while attempting to travel out of the country.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the apex court affirmed the decisions of both the trial court and the Court of Appeal, which found Ibrahim guilty of violating the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.
The incident occurred in 2019 when Ibrahim was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service for failing to declare the foreign currency in his possession, as required by law.
The trial court had convicted him in 2021, sentencing him to a fine and forfeiture of the undeclared amount. The Court of Appeal later affirmed the conviction in 2023, prompting the final appeal to the Supreme Court.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Inyang Okoro held that the appellant failed to demonstrate any miscarriage of justice or error in law in the concurrent findings of the lower courts.
“The appellant was fully aware of the legal requirement to declare sums above the prescribed threshold. His failure to do so constitutes a clear breach of the Money Laundering Act,” the court ruled.
The decision brings finality to the long-running case and serves as a strong reminder of the strict enforcement of currency declaration laws at Nigeria’s ports of entry.
Ibrahim Muhammad Badaru, who was not present in court, is expected to comply with the forfeiture order and pay any outstanding fines.
