The Presidency has dismissed growing public concerns over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s health following a brief stumble during an official reception ceremony in Ankara, Türkiye, yesterday.
In a statement issued late Monday, January 27, 2026, by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, the incident was described as “minor and of no medical consequence.”
The President had momentarily lost balance while greeting dignitaries at the reception hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as part of his two-day working visit to Türkiye. Video footage showed him quickly steadying himself with assistance from aides before continuing the engagement without further incident.
“President Tinubu is in excellent health and fully active. What occurred was a minor stumble caused by the crowded setting and uneven flooring at the venue. There is no cause for alarm, and the President continues his official engagements as scheduled,” the statement read.
President Tinubu is currently in Ankara for high-level talks focused on bilateral trade, defence cooperation, energy, and investment, including discussions on the proposed Türkiye-Nigeria Free Trade Agreement and military hardware support.

He is expected to return to Abuja later today after concluding meetings with Turkish business leaders and signing several memoranda of understanding.
The brief incident has nonetheless sparked renewed online discussions about the President’s health, with some social media users calling for greater transparency while others dismissed it as an overblown non-issue.
This is not the first time the Presidency has had to address health-related speculation since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. Similar incidents in the past were also attributed to fatigue, minor slips, or environmental factors.
