The National Police Council has formally confirmed AIG Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria. His name has now been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The decision was announced following a meeting of the Council, which convened after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

In a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu had earlier indicated that he would convene the National Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, after which his name would be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.
Disu Assumes Office The 59-year-old former Assistant Inspector-General assumed duty as acting IGP last Wednesday at a brief ceremony at the Louis Edet House, Force Headquarters, Abuja, where President Tinubu decorated him.

Until his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to AIG last year and had previously served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Disu pledged to build his tenure on three core commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability.

“My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” Disu told senior officers, family members, and other stakeholders present at the event.
The confirmation by the National Police Council marks the formal transition from acting to substantive IGP, subject to Senate screening and confirmation.
