President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, formally swore in AIG Tunji Disu as the 23rd Inspector-General of Police (IGP) at the State House Council Chambers, Abuja, ahead of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.
The brief ceremony also included the swearing-in of six commissioners of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and two commissioners of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Esther Walson-Jack, ministers, senior government officials, and family members of the appointees.
IGP Disu Addresses Security, State Police & Professionalism Speaking to journalists after the swearing-in, the new IGP outlined his immediate priorities and responded to current national security concerns, including the potential for protests linked to global tensions in the Middle East.

“The Nigeria Police Force is fully aware of various groups and sects operating in the country and the possible influence of external factors. Our officers are on high alert, conducting increased patrols, and will act professionally while respecting the law,” Disu said.
On the ongoing debate over state police, Disu stated that the initiative “has come to stay.” He described it as a potential partnership opportunity rather than a threat to federal policing:
“We see state police not as a replacement but as a complementary structure. It will strengthen community-level policing while the federal force handles national coordination and specialised operations. We are ready to collaborate fully.”

Tunji Disu was first appointed Acting IGP on February 24, 2026, following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. His substantive appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on March 2, 2026.
