The Chairman of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. John Gabaya, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ernest Agada, and released in Abuja on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Gabaya said the move was aimed at boosting council development through stronger federal partnerships and making a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gabaya, who was elected on the PDP platform in 2019 and is currently rounding off his second term in June 2026, is now seeking election as a Member of the House of Representatives for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency in 2027.
He explained that the decision was reached after fervent prayers and extensive consultations with stakeholders, and that it strictly complied with all constitutional provisions of the parties involved.

“I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform for advancing peace, unity, and development in the Bwari Area Council, Abuja. Gabaya expressed affection and respect for his former associates in the PDP, stressing that his defection does not translate into enmity but rather reflects a broader perspective on the collective interest in the council’s development.
He prayed for a peaceful and credible election in 2027 and expressed confidence that the council would “deliver overwhelming support for President Bola Tinubu.”
The defection adds to the growing list of PDP chieftains moving to the APC ahead of the 2027 polls, further weakening the opposition party’s structure in the FCT.
