An Abuja High Court on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, vacated the bench warrant it issued for the arrest of the factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki.
Justice Peter Kekemeke vacated the arrest warrant while ruling on an oral application by Turaki’s lawyer, Chris Uche (SAN), following Turaki’s appearance in court.

When the case was called, Uche apologised to the court for his absence on the previous adjourned date. He explained that he was out of the country and returned earlier that day, heading straight to court.
Uche also apologised on behalf of his client, describing Turaki as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who holds the court in the highest regard. He said Turaki’s absence was not intentional or deliberate and that he never meant to disrespect the court.

To show good faith, Uche withdrew the motion on notice filed by his client seeking a stay of execution of the arrest warrant. He added that Turaki was ready to take his plea on the charge pending against him.
Responding, prosecution lawyer Usman Rabiu said he had no objection to the applications, noting that the essence of the arrest warrant was to compel the defendant’s appearance. Since Turaki had now appeared, the purpose of the order had been met.

Justice Kekemeke noted that the defendant attended court on his own before the arrest warrant could be executed. He also acknowledged the apology from Turaki’s counsel, even though the reason for the absence was not entirely clear.
The judge elected to pardon the defendant and proceeded to vacate the arrest warrant.
Justice Kekemeke observed that the case was scheduled for Wednesday for the hearing of the motion on notice filed by the defendant, making it inappropriate to proceed with the arraignment on the same day.

He struck out the motion on notice filed by Turaki seeking a stay of execution of the arrest warrant after Uche applied to withdraw it and Rabiu raised no objection.
The judge then adjourned the matter until April 22, 2026, for Turaki’s arraignment on a one-count charge marked CR/647/2026, brought against him by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

Turaki is accused, among other things, of giving false information to the police.
Justice Kekemeke had issued the arrest warrant on March 26 after Turaki failed to appear in court for his arraignment.
The development is the latest twist in the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, as rival factions continue to battle for control of the party’s structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
