The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against six individuals over an alleged plot to wage war against the state and commit acts linked to terrorism. Those charged include retired Major General Mohammed Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, serving police inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani. They are scheduled to be arraigned on April 22 before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.

Also named in the charge but currently at large is former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva. The charges, filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo, allege that the defendants conspired in 2025 to “levy war against the state” with the aim of overpowering the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the prosecution, the accused persons had prior knowledge of a planned treasonable act but failed to report it to the appropriate authorities. They were said to have neglected their duty to inform either the President or security agencies despite having credible intelligence.

The charge further states that the defendants failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the alleged offences, thereby aiding the plot through inaction. Beyond treason, the suspects are also facing charges under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, with prosecutors alleging that they conspired to commit acts of terrorism capable of destabilising Nigeria’s constitutional structure.

Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim and Zekeri Umoru were specifically accused of attending meetings aimed at advancing a political ideology that could undermine national stability. The prosecution also alleged that the defendants provided indirect support for terrorist activities and failed to disclose critical intelligence that could have prevented the acts.

On the financial front, Bukar Goni is accused of retaining ₦50 million linked to terrorism financing, while Abdulkadir Sani allegedly held ₦2 million from similar sources. Zekeri Umoru was said to have accepted ₦10 million in cash outside the formal financial system and retained ₦8.8 million tied to suspected terrorism funding. Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim is also accused of possessing ₦1 million believed to be proceeds of terrorism financing. The case is expected to proceed at the Federal High Court in Abuja as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to clamp down on threats to national security.
