Nigerian activist lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Federal Government to immediately arrest controversial Islamic cleric, Dr. Ahmad Gumi, over his recent inflammatory comments on bandits and the security crisis in the country.
Adeyanju made the demand following Gumi’s interview on AIT where the cleric appeared to defend herdsmen and bandits, stating that they would not need to finance their “war machine” if they abandoned banditry.

Gumi claimed that herdsmen have endured significant hardship, with successive governments failing to modernise their lives. He added that bandits are not living luxurious lives and sometimes drink from streams.
“The terrorists need all the money they’re getting from kidnapping. It’s not like they are living luxurious lives. The government is putting too much pressure on them so they need money to finance their war machines,” Gumi said.
Reacting sharply to the viral video, Adeyanju, via his X handle, described Gumi as a terrorist sympathiser and called for his arrest to serve as a deterrent to others.
“People like Gumi can only survive in a country without a government. Terrorists sympathisers are terrorists. His words and actions promote terrorism in Nigeria. I call on the government to arrest him to serve as a deterrent to others,” Adeyanju wrote.
