The House of Representatives on Thursday moved Nigeria significantly closer to the establishment of state police after approving a comprehensive report on the proposed constitutional amendment.
The decision was taken during plenary presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas as lawmakers considered recommendations aimed at strengthening governance, security, and the effectiveness of public institutions.

The approval marks a major milestone in the long-running debate over state policing, which many stakeholders have championed as a critical solution to the rising wave of insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and violent crimes across the country.
Proponents argue that decentralising policing will improve intelligence gathering, enhance rapid response to security threats, and allow state governments to play a more proactive role in protecting lives and property.

In addition to the state police proposal, the House also approved 18 constitutional amendment clauses as part of the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The reforms are designed to strengthen democratic institutions and improve overall governance.
The proposals will now require concurrence from the Senate and approval by at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before they can become law.
