The Senate has formally distanced itself from comments made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole describing the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) as “a bunch of criminals and thieves,” insisting the remarks do not represent the position of the Red Chamber.

The upper legislative chamber also declared that no Senate committee has the authority to issue, authorise, or execute a warrant of arrest except in strict compliance with the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act and with the express approval of the Senate President.

The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, during Thursday’s plenary.

The clarification came barely 24 hours after the Senate Committee on Public Accounts reportedly recommended the issuance of a warrant of arrest against the immediate past Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL, Mele Kyari, over his alleged failure to honour invitations.

Senator Bamidele warned that any attempt by a Senate committee to independently issue or execute a warrant of arrest without authorisation could amount to an unlawful exercise of power. He stressed the need to uphold the constitutional doctrine of fair hearing and presumption of innocence.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Senator Abba Moro, and Senator Adamu Aliero backed the motion, with some describing Oshiomhole’s statement as reckless and damaging to Nigeria’s image and investment climate.

In his defence, Senator Oshiomhole said he made the remarks under provocation after NNPCL officials allegedly attacked lawmakers. He expressed willingness to apologise if it was the wish of the Senate.

The development comes hours after Mele Kyari reacted to the arrest warrant, claiming he is currently outside the country undergoing critical medical care.
