The Federal Ministry of Works has imposed a ban on the use of commercial motorcycles (okada) and tricycles (keke) on the newly constructed Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to protect the multi-billion naira infrastructure.

The restriction takes effect this week, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mr. Olufemi Dare.

Dare said the ban is part of broader measures to prevent misuse of the highway and ensure its long-term durability. The ministry has also prohibited the indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles along the coastal highway and on bridges across Lagos State.

The Federal Controller warned against the dumping of refuse along highway corridors, describing the practice as unacceptable and a threat to road safety and maintenance.
“Warning signs outlining the new restrictions have already been installed at strategic points, while enforcement task force personnel will be deployed to ensure full compliance,” he said.

Dare stressed that violators would face appropriate sanctions and urged all motorists and road users to comply with the directives in the interest of public safety.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is regarded as a landmark national infrastructure project designed to boost economic activities, improve connectivity, and reduce travel time between Lagos and Cross River State.
“Protecting this infrastructure will not only extend its lifespan but also ensure that Nigerians continue to enjoy its economic and transportation benefits for years to come,” Dare added.
