At least two people have died during wild celebrations in Mexico City following Mexico’s national team’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador, which secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
City authorities confirmed that a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from suffocation as huge crowds gathered in the streets to celebrate the historic win.

Officials said investigations are ongoing, while local media have reported an unconfirmed third fatality linked to the celebrations.
Mexico’s victory ended a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage win at the World Cup and triggered massive jubilation across the capital, with thousands of fans flooding public spaces, waving flags, and chanting in support of El Tri.
The team will now face either England or DR Congo in the Round of 16.
