The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has accused President Bola Tinubu of showing a lack of compassion and leadership capacity in handling the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo State.
In a post on X on Monday titled “Worsening Leadership Crisis in the Country Now Evident”, Obi claimed that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had not received a single call from President Tinubu more than 50 days after the incident.

Obi said he had publicly appealed twice to the kidnappers for the release of the children and had spoken with Governor Makinde twice to express solidarity, describing the abduction as “a Nigerian tragedy” rather than a state-specific problem.
“The government and people of Oyo State, more than 50 days after the abduction of the schoolchildren without any tangible effort toward their rescue, should rightly feel bitter and abandoned,” Obi wrote.
The former Anambra State governor revealed that during a visit to Ibadan on Friday, July 3, alongside economist Prof. Pat Utomi, he was shocked to learn from Makinde that the President had not reached out to him since the incident.

Obi drew a parallel with the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls abduction, recalling that Tinubu was among those who criticised then-President Goodluck Jonathan for delaying contact with the affected governor.
“Today, under President Tinubu, there have been more than 13 school kidnappings, yet the President has found it difficult to call the affected state’s chief executive after more than 50 days (over 7 weeks). This is outrageous,” he stated.
Obi argued that governance has collapsed under the current administration and called on President Tinubu to either resign or refrain from seeking re-election in 2027.
“Amid such an apparent display of incompetence, the president should either resign or, at the very least, abstain from seeking re-election for the sake of our dear country. This call is patriotic, not political,” Obi said.

The Presidency is yet to respond to Obi’s latest criticism.
The abduction of the schoolchildren in Oyo State remains a major security concern, with many Nigerians calling for urgent action to secure their release.
