Ado-Odo/Ota LG Enacts Landmark Environmental, Public Safety Bills

After successful debate, the Legislature of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State, has passed three critical bills aimed at enhancing environmental standards and public order across the region. The approved bills were unanimously adopted after passing the third reading in a remarkable expression of unity among members.

The bills are the Solid Waste Collection and Scavenging Activities Control Bye-Law, 2025, the Control and Regulation of Trading Activities Around Roadways’ and the Establishment of an Environmental Marshall Corps.

The Solid Waste Collection and Scavenging Activities Control Bye-Law, 2025, outlines regulations governing solid waste collection and scavenging operations, in order to promote cleaner and safer communities.

The Control and Regulation of Trading Activities Around Roadways, Pedestrian Paths, Road Shoulders, and Related Spaces seeks to reduce illegal trading along major public access ways, improving pedestrian safety and traffic management.

The Establishment of an Environmental Marshall Corps, aimed at reinforcing compliance with sanitation and environmental protection laws, is scheduled for a public hearing.

Furthermore, the House passed a resolution to invite Red Mercury Royal Services, a consultant contracted for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), to explain alleged overbilling of stacking fees meant for buildings under construction.

Importantly, the Council advised the Executive Chairman, Alhaji Wasiu Lawal, FCA, to immediately suspend the activities of Red Mercury Royal Services pending investigation for the alleged overbilling. Previously, it approved a fee of ₦20,000 for the permit but learnt that residents were reportedly being charged as high as ₦200,000 for the fee, an act the House condemned as exploitative.

Consequently, the House Committee on IGR was granted full authority by the House to investigate the consultant’s actions, make necessary recommendations and also, ensure justice for affected residents. “We will not allow any organization to weaponize revenue collection against our people.

The leader of the House, Hon. Gbadamosi Mutairu Akanji, ACA, ACIB, while reiterating that ““We will not allow any organization to weaponize revenue collection against our people”, emphasized the newly enacted bills and resolutions “reflect our resolve to uphold transparency, environmental justice, and responsible leadership.”
