The Awori Development Union (ADUN) has called for unity among Awori communities across Lagos and Ogun states, while rejecting claims that the organisation is promoting the supremacy of Isheri over other Awori settlements.
In an official press release, the National Executive Council and Board of Trustees of ADUN said recent commentaries on social media had misrepresented reconciliatory and intellectual consultations between the union’s leadership and community stakeholders, including its Grand Patron, Prince (Engr.) Gbenga Ajiboye, popularly known as Baba Awori.

The union described the claims of “Isheri supremacy” as false and said ADUN does not belong to one town but to every part of Awori land.
ADUN said discussions at its meetings focused on documenting and understanding Awori history rather than creating rivalry among communities. It described the development of Aworiland as sequential and layered, with different settlements and communities forming interconnected parts of the wider Awori heritage.
The union specifically mentioned Isheri, Iddo Island, Ado-Odo, Ota, Ètè Kingdom, Ilamiro, Agbara, Iba, Idimu, Isolo, Itire, Apa and Eko among the communities and historical areas it said should be recognised in the documentation of Awori history.

According to ADUN, greater attention must be given to archival, legal and archaeological evidence in documenting the history of the Awori people. It said proper documentation would help protect ancestral claims and prevent historical accounts from being distorted.
The organisation also announced plans to produce what it described as an official and comprehensive ethnographic and historical map of Aworiland.
ADUN said the project would cover ancient settlements and kingdoms that it believes have not received sufficient attention, including Ilamiro, which it described as an ancient mother-settlement linked to the history of Igbesa.

It also highlighted the Ètè Kingdom and its traditional connections around Oju Elete and the Ologe Lagoon area, mentioning locations including Ishagira, Ilemba Awori, Egan Oromi and Agbara.
The union further said it would continue to highlight the historical importance of the Idejo and referenced the 1921 Privy Council victory in Amodu Tijani as part of its broader effort to assert Awori claims to the coastal area.
ADUN expressed concern over what it described as the loss and acquisition of ancestral lands, the limited representation of Awori history in national historical records, and what it called attempts to portray the Awori as an invisible or conquered people.

The union therefore called on Awori traditional rulers, elders, youths, professionals and descendants in Nigeria and the diaspora to put aside internal divisions and work together towards preserving their history, land and cultural identity.
ADUN also appealed for financial and other forms of support for its planned activities, including ethnographic mapping, historical research, communal land-rights advocacy and the restoration of cultural monuments.
The organisation stated that it is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under registration number 9296097 and urged interested persons to become registered members and support its projects.

The union ended its statement with a call for Awori people to unite and take an active role in preserving and promoting their heritage.
