The Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, has highlighted the ongoing marginalization of women in politics and specifically emphasized the need for strengthened legislation to encourage increased participation of women in politics at all levels.
Mrs. Betsy Obaseki made the call at the Edo Women Summit which was held at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, as part of activities to mark the 2023 Alaghodaro Summit.
The statement by the Edo First Lady at the Edo Women Summit during the Alaghodaro 2023 Summit reflect her commitment to addressing the marginalization of women in politics, particularly at the local government level.
The Edo Women Summit was held as part of the broader Alaghodaro Summit in 2023. The Summit is an annual event in Edo State, and the women’s conference provided a platform for women from all 18 local government areas of Edo State to come together and discuss issues related to women and the girl-child.
Mrs. Obaseki commended Edo women for their active role in the realization of the Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) Agenda. She expressed gratitude for the support received from the women and acknowledged their steadfastness in standing with the Governor, even in the face of opposition.
“This is the last Alaghodaro which is the reason why l said let us bring the women together to celebrate all of us and to thank every one of you for being great and progressive women. You have given the Governor such wonderful and marvelous support since we came on board.”
The First Lady recognized the long-standing support of women, some of whom she had known since the 2015 campaign. She praised their determination, strength, and loyalty to the Governor, stating that their reward would not only be in heaven but also on earth.
“I see faces that I first saw in 2015 before Governor Obaseki became Governor; when we were campaigning. You are still with us believing and refusing bribes from the opposition from time to time, election after election. You remain determined, standing strong with the Governor, believing in him, and staying with him to the end. Your reward would not only be in Heaven, rather you will begin to enjoy them here on earth.”
Mrs. Obaseki issued a warning against the marginalization of women in politics, especially those in positions of authority and power. She emphasized that women play a crucial role in making things happen and warned that disenfranchising and marginalizing women could hinder success for those in government and the party.
“I want them to remember that election is coming. It is women who make things happen; those of you in authority and in power who allow this thing to happen both in Government and in the party. Women cannot be disenfranchised and marginalized and you expect to be successful.”
In summary, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki used the Edo Women Summit as an opportunity to address the issues of gender marginalization in politics, commend the women for their contributions, and emphasize the importance of women’s participation in the political process, particularly as elections approached.
