Drawing the rope beyond the curtain of time, Pope Francis, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. According to Vatican News, he died at 7:35 AM local time at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced the Pope’s death in a televised statement from the chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae. He stated, “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. His papacy was marked by a focus on humility, social justice, and inclusivity. He advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, supported immigrant protections, prioritized climate action, and worked to elevate the role of women in the Church.

In the weeks leading up to his death, Pope Francis had been hospitalized for double pneumonia and bronchitis. Despite his health challenges, he delivered his final Easter blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica on April 20, 2025.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who met with Pope Francis the day before his death, noted that the pontiff appeared “obviously very ill” during their meeting. Despite his condition, the Pope offered gifts to Vance’s children and shared a moment of reflection.

Following his death, the Vatican has initiated the traditional protocols for a papal vacancy. Cardinal Farrell will oversee the rite of ascertainment of death and the placement of Pope Francis’s body in a coffin. The funeral is expected to take place within the next few days, adhering to the Pope’s wishes for a simplified ceremony.

A few weeks back, Pope Francis’ health was in the headlines. He was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Friday, Feb. 14, to undergo testing and treatment for bronchitis. From that point forward, developments indicated that he was showing signs of mild kidney failure and respiratory issues. He received a blood transfusion on Feb. 23.

On Feb. 23, he wrote on X, “Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!”

After his hospitalization, the Vatican claimed that the pontiff’s health was improving slightly. This uptick did not last long, as an announcement on Feb. 28 revealed that he began suffering a “breathing crisis” making his condition suddenly much worse. After several days, he was taken off a ventilator and appeared to be improving.

On March 23, the pontiff made his first public appearance in over a month. He was discharged from the hospital.
