Auschwitz Survivor Eva Schloss, Anne Frank’s Stepsister, Dies at 96

Eva Schloss, a Holocaust survivor, author, and stepsister of Anne Frank who dedicated decades to educating the world about the horrors of the Nazi regime and fighting prejudice, has died at the age of 96.

Schloss passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026, in London, her family confirmed in a statement.

Born Eva Geiringer in Vienna on May 11, 1929, she fled Nazi-occupied Austria with her family to Amsterdam in 1938, where they became neighbours of the Frank family. After the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, both families went into hiding. Eva and her mother survived Auschwitz-Birkenau, but her father and brother perished. Anne Frank and her sister Margot died in Bergen-Belsen shortly before liberation.

After the war, Eva’s mother married Otto Frank, Anne’s father, making Eva the posthumous stepsister of Anne. Schloss later became a tireless advocate for Holocaust remembrance, authoring memoirs including Eva’s Story and After Auschwitz, and delivering thousands of talks to schools and organisations worldwide.

In her later years, she co-founded the Anne Frank Trust UK and continued speaking out against antisemitism and intolerance until well into her 90s.

Tributes poured in from world leaders, Holocaust organisations, and survivors’ groups. The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam called her “a powerful voice for tolerance and humanity,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described her as “an inspiration whose courage and compassion touched millions.”

Schloss is survived by her three daughters, five grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.
