The leadership crisis in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) took a dramatic turn on Monday, March 23, 2026, as Tajudeen Baruwa and his supporters reclaimed the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, effectively dislodging the faction loyal to Musiliu Akinsanya (popularly known as MC Oluomo).

Baruwa, who is contesting the NURTW presidency, addressed journalists at the secretariat flanked by supporters from across the country. He declared the takeover peaceful and backed by two court judgments delivered in his favour.

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), in suit No. NICN/ABJ/263/2023, presided over by Hon. Justice O.O. Oyewumi, affirmed Baruwa as the duly elected President of the NURTW.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, in appeal No. CA/ABJ/CV/293/2024 (judgment delivered November 8, 2025), upheld the NICN ruling, dismissed the appeal filed by Najeem Usman Yasin, Tajudeen Agbede, and others (known loyalists of MC Oluomo), and awarded N100,000 in costs against the appellants.

Baruwa stated that despite repeated notifications to the Nigeria Police Force attaching copies of the judgments, the response was not encouraging. After waiting nearly two years, his team moved to resume duties on Monday in compliance with the court orders.

Baruwa’s Statement Highlights “We are taking over in a peaceful manner… it is not a forceful takeover but just carrying out the court’s orders.” “We decided to resume back at the office today without causing any violence, and here we are.”

One member of his group was attacked and is hospitalised, but the situation remains under control. “We are still open to reconciliation as we are a lawful organization and not a troublemaker. No one is above the law.”

General Secretary Suleiman Musa added that despite several appeals, those occupying the secretariat unlawfully refused to vacate. He welcomed journalists as witnesses to ensure transparency.

The protracted leadership tussle intensified after Baruwa opposed the inauguration of MC Oluomo as NURTW president. The NICN and Court of Appeal rulings have now validated Baruwa’s claim to the presidency, prohibiting interference in the operations of his executive.

The takeover marks a significant shift in one of Nigeria’s most powerful transport unions, which controls major commercial transport operations across the country.
