BOWFT 2023: Betsy Obaseki Football Tourney Begins Today as Edo Queens, Two Others Battle for Top Spot in Group A

The Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) is set to begin its third edition on Monday, October 23rd, 2023, with several Nigerian women’s football teams competing for a total prize of N60 million.

Speaking to newsmen at the weekend, in Benin City, the Chairman, Communications Sub-Committee for the tournament, Crusoe Osagie, said the tournament aims to promote women’s football and empower the girl-child while raising awareness about and discouraging gender-based violence.

According to him the Edo Queens Football Club, Naija Ratels of Abuja and Ogun-based Remo Stars Ladies are set for a riveting showdown in Group A of the tournament, scheduled to commence tomorrow, Monday.

Here’s a breakdown of the participating teams and groups:

The tournament will be held at four sports facilities in Edo State, including the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, University of Benin Sports Complex, Western Boys Mini-Stadium, and the Edo State College of Nursing and Health Sciences Mini-Stadium.

Crusoe Osagie said all is set for the hosting of the preseason tournament which promises to be an unforgettable sporting spectacle.

The theme for this year’s edition is “End Gender-Based Violence,” and it aims to raise awareness about the importance of eradicating gender-based violence in all its forms.

The tournament is organized by the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, in collaboration with private sector partners, with the goal of promoting grassroots sports development and addressing social issues.

The tournament’s activities began with the draws and the official unveiling of the mascot and theme song at the Presidential Villa in Government House, Benin City. The competition promises to be an exciting sporting spectacle with top women’s football teams from Nigeria’s Women’s Football League (NWFL) competing for the prize.
