The All Progressives Congress (APC) has further solidified its dominance in the Nigerian Senate following the defection of Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.
The defection was announced on Wednesday during plenary when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Katung’s letter formally notifying the chamber of his switch.
In the letter, Senator Katung cited the prolonged leadership crisis within the PDP as a key factor, stating that the party could no longer guarantee his political future or effectively serve the aspirations of his constituents.
He emphasized that after extensive consultations with stakeholders and constituents, he concluded that aligning with the APC would provide a better platform to deliver development and representation to Kaduna South.

“Evolving political realities in Nigeria have shown that hope for a secure future for myself and my constituents lies with the APC,” Katung stated in his letter.
With this latest defection, the APC’s strength in the 109-member Senate rises to 74 seats, while the PDP drops to 27. The remaining seats are held by the Labour Party (4), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) (2), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) (1), and Social Democratic Party (SDP) (1).
The move marks another blow to the opposition PDP, which has seen several lawmakers cross over to the ruling party amid internal crises.
Political analysts note that Katung’s defection could further bolster APC’s influence in Southern Kaduna, a region historically seen as an opposition stronghold.
