Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, was on Friday remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Gwarinpa, following his arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on an eight-count charge of fraud, abuse of office, and accepting bribes totaling over ₦2.2 billion.
Presiding Justice Maryam Hassan ordered the remand pending the hearing of Ngige’s bail application on Monday, December 15, after the 72-year-old ex-governor of Anambra State and APC chieftain pleaded not guilty to all counts. The charges, filed October 14, 2025, stem from alleged irregularities in contracts awarded to companies linked to the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) during his tenure from 2015 to 2023 under the Buhari administration.
EFCC counsel Sylvanus Tahir (SAN) urged the remand, citing the “enormous” nature of the offences punishable by at least five years imprisonment and Ngige’s failure to surrender his international passport after a medical trip in October. Ngige’s lead counsel, Joe Agi (SAN), countered with an oral bail request, highlighting the defendant’s health needs and arguing Kuje lacks adequate facilities, but the court deferred ruling until a formal application is argued.
The EFCC accused Ngige of:
Conferring unfair advantages on companies like Jeff & Xris Limited (owned by associate Nwosu Jideofor Chukwunwike) by awarding eight NSITF contracts worth ₦362 million for consultancy, training, and supplies.
Accepting ₦38.6 million from Cezimo Nigeria Limited, ₦55 million from Zitacom Nigeria Limited, and ₦26 million from Jeff & Xris Limited as “gifts” tied to the deals.
Brokering eight contracts to 1-Sec Security Nigeria Ltd for ₦583.6 million, violating Section 17(a) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

The total fraud: ₦2,469,030,738.90, including ₦2.2 billion in misappropriated funds for “technical supervision” and “logistics support” known to be false pretences.
Ngige, appearing frail in court, denied the charges, with Agi insisting: “My client is innocent and ready to prove it.” The case adjourned to February 2026 for trial.
Ngige’s APC allies decried the arraignment as “politically motivated” amid 2027 jockeying, with a source close to him calling it “Buhari-era vendetta.” PDP’s Debo Ologunagba quipped: “No one is above the law finally.”
EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale affirmed: “This is justice, not persecution.” Ngige, a 2023 presidential aspirant, faces potential 10 years plus if convicted.
