The Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the preferred choice by traditional king makers for the royal office as new Alaafin of Oyo, ending the leadership vacuum created by the passing of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in April 2022.

The announcement was made on Friday, January 10, by Dotun Oyelade, the state’s Commissioner for Information.

The appointment follows extensive consultations with the Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers in Oyo, who utilized traditional divination methods to select Prince Owoade. This marks the resolution of legal disputes that had delayed the process and caused months of controversy over the succession.
