On March 3, 2025, the Lagos State House of Assembly underwent significant leadership changes. Mudashiru Obasa, who had been impeached on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct, was reinstated as Speaker. Following his reinstatement, Mojisola Meranda, who had succeeded Obasa as Speaker after his impeachment, resigned from her position. Subsequently, she was re-elected as Deputy Speaker, a role she had held prior to Obasa’s initial removal.

In addition to these changes, other principal officers of the Assembly, including the Chief Whip, Deputy Chief Whip, Majority Leader, and Deputy Majority Leader, also resigned and were replaced. These developments occurred amid efforts to resolve the leadership crisis that had plagued the Assembly since Obasa’s impeachment.
Meranda, in her resignation speech, expressed gratitude to her colleagues for their support and stated that her decision was aimed at fostering peace within the Assembly. Her resignation and the subsequent restructuring of the Assembly’s leadership were part of measures to address the tumultuous situation following Obasa’s impeachment and the ensuing power struggle.
These leadership changes are significant in the context of the Assembly’s recent history. Obasa’s impeachment in January 2025 was a result of allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Meranda, who was the Deputy Speaker at the time, was elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following Obasa’s removal.
Her tenure as Speaker was marked by efforts to promote gender equality and legislative reforms.
The reinstatement of Obasa and the reorganization of the Assembly’s leadership reflect ongoing efforts to stabilize the legislative body and ensure effective governance in Lagos State.
