Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further consolidating the party’s dominance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defection was announced by APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, during the party’s 14th National Caucus Meeting at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Wednesday, December 18, 2025.
Yilwatda, who hails from Plateau State and was Mutfwang’s opponent in the 2023 governorship election, described the move as a “strategic gain,” stating: “With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC.”
President Bola Tinubu presided over the meeting, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Assembly leaders, and several governors who recently defected from the PDP, including Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom).

In a subsequent address to stakeholders in Jos on Thursday, Governor Mutfwang confirmed that President Tinubu personally invited him to join the APC. He emphasised that the decision was made after months of consultations and was in the best interest of Plateau State, citing ongoing crises within the PDP and the need to align with the federal government for development benefits.
“Although we’ve had our issues with Plateau APC, we can’t deny the favour and cordiality with which the Tinubu-led administration has related with us,” Mutfwang said, adding that staying in the PDP posed too high a risk to the mandate given by Plateau citizens.
The Plateau State chapter of the APC welcomed the governor, pledging full support for his success in the party.
Mutfwang’s defection follows a wave of high-profile exits from the PDP, leaving the opposition with significantly reduced gubernatorial representation. Analysts view it as part of a broader political realignment strengthening the APC’s national foothold.
