President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to resign from office with immediate effect, a senior police officer has confirmed to DDNewsOnline.
The directive was reportedly issued during a closed-door meeting between President Tinubu and the IGP at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening, February 23, 2026. No official reason has been provided for the sudden removal, but sources within the Force Headquarters described the atmosphere as one of “uneasy calm,” with officers and personnel discussing the development in low tones.

Disu was decorated as Assistant Inspector-General by the outgoing IGP Egbetokun and has held several strategic positions, including: Commissioner of Police, FCT (Abuja) Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, Head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), a position previously held by the late DCP Abba Kyari and Principal Staff Officer to then-Acting IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Born on April 13, 1966, Disu is a graduate of English Education from Lagos State University (LASU). He holds two master’s degrees one in Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, and another in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology from LASU. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

On February 6, 2026, Disu assumed duty at the FCID Annex in Lagos, succeeding Margaret Ochalla. Upon resumption, he pledged to strengthen operational and investigative capacity, adopt a zero-tolerance approach to corruption, and called for stakeholder support in the fight against graft.

IGP Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure was extended in 2023 following an amendment to the Police Service Act, which provides for a single four-year term for Inspectors-General. The extension meant he was due to retire in 2027. The sudden directive to resign has surprised many within the Force, especially given the absence of any publicly stated reason.
