Unpreparedness and lack of public information service concerning the hazardous effects of climate change as observed in the recent heavy downpour and flooding in Benin City, Edo State, on Saturday July 5, 2025, leading to the death of a 12-year-old boy, Nathan Spencer who was drowned after being swept away by floodwaters on the way to a examination centre.

Nathan, a student of Future Leaders Academy, was on his way to write his Middle Basic Assessment Examination at Liberty Secondary School, Uselu, when intense rainfall caused severe flooding along the Uselu-Ugbowo road. Eye witnesses said the road was completely submerged, creating dangerous conditions for pedestrians and motorists.
A trending viral video of the incident showed a man carrying the boy’s lifeless body on his shoulders while bystanders urged him to rush to the hospital. Some on lookers criticized the decision to allow the child travel alone under such weather condition.
This year, the federal meteorological department, NiMet, has warned that Nigeria would experience intense flooding in some parts of the country. The global impact of climate change, exacerbated by local poor drainage systems, blocked waterways and faulty urban development are responsible for some of the tragedies being recorded from the flood-prone areas.

Experts are warning that vulnerable groups, especially school children, are at increasing risk during such extreme weather events during school circles, if urgent adaptation, infrastructure measures and mass enlightenment campaign measures are not implemented.
Following the tragedy, the Edo State Government revoked the licences of two schools involved in the said examination, the victim’s school and the exam venue. Dr Paddy Iyamu The State Commissioner for Education, who visited the grieving family on Tuesday, confirmed that the head teacher of the school had been arrested. Though, many people have defended the schools, noting they are not responsible for flooding.
Dr Iyamu conveyed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s condolences and stated, “The state government will ensure that those responsible for this avoidable death are held accountable. The principal is currently in police detention.”
