Civil and public servants in Cross River State are set for an unprecedented festive break as Governor Bassey Otu’s administration declares a 20-day public holiday from December 15, 2025, to January 5, 2026, to immerse workers in Christmas and New Year celebrations ahead of the iconic Carnival Calabar.
The directive, aimed at boosting participation in the state’s cultural extravaganza, was outlined in an official circular (Ref: GO/HOS/4/Vol.II/277) signed by Head of Service Orok Okon on Saturday. It exempts essential duty officers such as health, security, and emergency services from the leave, ensuring seamless public operations.
“The approval is to enable Civil/Public Servants to participate in the Christmas festivities within the State fully,” the circular states, emphasizing vibrant and secure celebrations for residents and visitors.
This extended yuletide aligns with the 20th edition of Carnival Calabar, Africa’s biggest street party, which kicks off December 28 and promises global tourism influx. Officials say it will spur economic activity through increased spending on events, crafts, and hospitality.

The move follows the federal government’s declaration of December 25 26, 2025, and January 1, 2026, as national holidays. Cross River’s extension is the longest among states, surpassing Lagos’ 10-day break and Rivers’ 14 days.
