Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), appeared in court on Tuesday alongside his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and associate Hajia Bashir Asabe, where they were arraigned on a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering involving billions of naira.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused the trio of conspiracy, concealment, and retention of proceeds of unlawful activities between 2015 and 2025 a period overlapping Malami’s tenure under the Buhari administration. Specific allegations include using corporate entities to launder funds for property acquisitions in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi States.
All defendants pleaded not guilty before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The judge rejected an oral bail application and ordered their remand at Kuje Correctional Centre, adjourning bail hearings to January 2, 2026.

Malami has denied the charges, previously describing related probes as politically motivated.
Former Senator Dino Melaye, who faced multiple prosecutions under Malami’s watch as AGF including cases he described as “frivolous” and politically driven reacted to the development on social media.
Melaye reminded Nigerians of his own frequent court appearances, noting how Malami’s office pursued charges against him, including taking over a police case. He concluded with a sarcastic “Wish him well,” implying karma.
