The order, titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” aims to end birthright citizenship.

The move is part of Trump’s broader immigration reforms, which also include declaring illegal immigration at the US-Mexico border, a national emergency and targeting criminal cartels.

This order, will also impact children born to mothers with temporary lawful presence in the US, such as those on student or tourist visas, if the father is not a US citizen or lawful permanent resident.

However, it’s essential to note that this policy will only apply to individuals born within the US after 30 days of the order, which would be February 19, 2025.

As at now, there’s an ongoing conversation and possible legal challenge on the broad implication of the order, in the context of United States’ constitutional interpretations concerning legal birthright citizenship.
