EYE-ON-USA: Trump Unveils Ambitious Plans for $175B ‘Golden Dome Project’ to Protect US From Missiles

President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday from the Oval Office his administration’s definite plans for a Golden Dome (GD) Missile Defence Program to protect the United States from missiles. It is envisaged to be a multilayered $175 billion system that for the first time will put U.S. weapons in space.

Trump, alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, disclosed that the program will be a much more extensive version of Israel’s Iron Dome that includes a massive array of surveillance satellites and a separate fleet of attacking satellites that would shoot down offensive missiles soon after liftoff.

Presently, the U.S. does have missile defense initiatives such as the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD), Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense, and THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense.

The GD is envisioned to be an advanced version of Israel’s Iron Dome, which has been extremely effective, intercepting over 5,000 rockets with a success rate of over 90% for short-range threats. The U.S. has purchased some Iron Dome batteries and tested them, but they are used for limited defensive purposes, not the extensive global satellite-based defense system that Trump has signaled to embark upon.

Trump also said that “everything” for the project would be built in the United States.
“Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world,” Trump said, adding that he believes it will be completed within two-and-a-half to three years.

“We’re the only ones that have this, we call it ‘super technology,’ nobody else has it, and nobody else has nearly, nowhere near what we have,” Trump said. “So this is a very exciting project, this is something that will — the general said close to 100 percent protection — so that’s something we need.”

The president also said that Canada wants to be involved in the project, which will be led by the Vice Chief of Space Operations, United States Space Force General Michael Guetlein.

Trump’s “one big beautiful bill” included $25 billion in funding for the Golden Dome, to which the president said it was “amazing” how easy it would be to fund.

Meanwhile, Hegseth called the project a “game-changer” and a “generational investment in the security of America and Americans.”

Trump’s announcement earned praise from House members who are veterans, who said the Golden Dome represents a serious step toward strengthening our homeland defenses and staying ahead of adversaries like China and Russia.

“Over forty years ago, President Reagan launched the Strategic Defense Initiative to protect America from Soviet nuclear threats. Today, the danger has multiplied: China and Russia have aggressively expanded their nuclear arsenals, Iran and North Korea are racing toward nuclear capability, and shadowy non-state actors lurk at our borders. Advanced hypersonic weapons fly faster, hit harder, and can slip past our defenses,” RSC Chairman August Pfluger (TX-11) said.

“President Trump’s Golden Dome stands as America’s ultimate shield. This innovation brings Reagan’s vision into the 21st century, meeting today’s deadlier threats head-on. With enemies at the gate and our future at stake, America stands united behind President Trump’s unshakeable commitment to defend our homeland.”

China and Russia have put offensive weapons in space, such as satellites with abilities to disable critical U.S. satellites, which can make the U.S. vulnerable to attack.

Last year the U.S. said Russia was developing a space-based nuclear weapon that could loiter in space for long durations, then release a burst that would take out satellites around it. Trump said he had not yet spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the program, “but at the right time, we will,” he told reporters at the White House.

But there’s no money for the Golden Dome project yet, and the program overall is “still in the conceptual stage,” newly confirmed Air Force Secretary Troy Meink told senators Tuesday.

While the president picked the concept he wanted, the Pentagon is still developing the requirements that Golden Dome will need to meet — which is not the way new systems are normally developed.

The Pentagon and U.S. Northern Command are still drafting what is known as an initial capabilities document, the U.S. official said. That is how Northern Command, which is responsible for homeland defense, identifies what it will need the system to do.

The U.S. already has many missile defense capabilities, such as the Patriot missile batteries that the U.S. has provided to Ukraine to defend against incoming missiles as well as an array of satellites in orbit to detect missile launches. Some of those existing systems will be incorporated into Golden Dome.

Trump directed the Pentagon to pursue the space-based interceptors in an executive order during the first week of his presidency.
