There is a kind of transformation that does not announce itself with noise or trends. It happens quietly, within rooms where minds are stretched, perspectives reshaped, and something deeper than mere skill begins to form. In late February 2026, over four intense days, such a transformation unfolded in Lagos not loud, not chaotic, but, as one participant described it, “hot, like steel in a furnace.”
Nigeria’s creative industry continues to gain global attention in film, media, and digital storytelling. Yet beneath this growth lies a persistent challenge: many young creatives still lack access to structured, practical guidance. Storyteller and creative mentor Cash Onadele (Aiye-ko-ooto) chose to address this gap not through commentary, but through direct action.

The Storytelling Masterclass for Young Creative Entrepreneurs, themed “Story Themes & Structures” for the February edition, was born from a clear observation: passion alone is not enough. Storytelling, like any serious craft, must be taught, refined, and engineered.
Inside the masterclass, storytelling was stripped of romantic ambiguity and rebuilt as a disciplined craft. Under the guidance of Cash Onadele and academic facilitator Prof. Tunji Sotimirin, participants were taught to think like architects of narrative. The sessions focused on: The architecture of story, The psychology of characters, The weight of theme and message and The discipline behind narrative structure. There were no shortcuts. As one participant noted, “A good story is not accidental. It is engineered. Layered. Deliberate.”

At the heart of the training was a simple yet powerful framework the 4Es: Entertaining, Educational, Expression and Enlightenment. According to the facilitators, any story lacking one of these elements risks losing its impact. But when all four are present, a story does more than exist it lives, influences, and endures.
The most profound shift reported by participants was not just in their writing, but in their perception. “They didn’t just teach us how to write,” one attendee shared. “They taught us how to see.” Ideas once considered vague became structured. Concepts once dismissed as “just thoughts” became viable narratives.
For some, the transformation was immediate. One participant who had never considered writing fiction left the program having completed a story exploring the subtle psychological effects of social media on teenagers in a fast-paced world.

In an era where knowledge is often monetised, one decision set this masterclass apart: it was completely free. No hidden fees. No selective barriers. Participants were not only taught they were supported, mentored, and even catered for during the sessions. This was not charity. It was intentional investment an understanding that the future of Nigeria’s creative economy depends on giving more people the chance to begin.
The impact of the masterclass extends far beyond its four-day duration. Participants left with: A structured approach to storytelling, Renewed creative confidence, A deeper sense of purpose And, most importantly, the courage to begin Because when a writer understands structure, possibility expands. Ideas become clearer. Execution becomes sharper. Voice becomes stronger.

In convening this initiative, Cash Onadele demonstrated a form of leadership rarely amplified in today’s fast-paced media environment not performative, not attention-seeking, but deeply impactful. A leadership rooted in building people. Because industries are not sustained by platforms alone they are sustained by the people who know how to use them meaningfully.
The next edition of the masterclass, themed “Frame Story & Characters”, is scheduled to hold from 22nd to 25th April 2026 (Batch A). DDNewsOnline will be there live to cover the sessions and bring you the voices and insights emerging from this important gathering.

If replicated and sustained, initiatives like this could play a defining role in Nigeria’s creative future not by creating more content, but by creating better storytellers. Storytellers who understand that fiction is not trivial. That narratives shape culture. That stories can challenge power, shift perspectives, and redefine what is possible.
As the February sessions ended and participants returned to their individual paths, one truth lingered: the fire had done its work. And somewhere, in notebooks and minds now sharpened by structure, new stories are already forming waiting to be told.
