Group Appeals to FCT Minister to Consider Construction of Automotive /Mechanic Village in FCT

Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative (APRI), a road traffic safety focused organization, has appealed to the Hon. Minister of FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike to consider the construction of automotive village and relocation of Automobile Mechanics, Spare Parts dealers and others dealing in Motor Vehicle Related activities in the Federal Capital Territory to a specific location that will serve all auto Mechanics, Spare Part Dealers, Motor Dealers and others in the Motor Vehicle Related Trade and Services in FCT.

The appeal was made by the organization’s Executive Director, Ambassador Fidelis Nnadi, while responding to the quest for road worthiness of vehicles as a panacea to road crash reduction in FCT and Nigeria in general; citing that road crash index of FCT need to be curtailed if not curbed.

Ambassador Fidelis Nnadi, whose organization represents the interest of road users and others in the Motor Vehicle Related Trade and Services, appealed to the Hon. Minister that by relocating the Spare Part Dealers and mechanics to the appropriate location, it will enhance healthy environment and quality safety and service delivery to motorists whose vehicles are used in conveying goods and people in nation’s capital and beyond.

Reacting on the issue of Apo Mechanic village that is currently undergoing road construction, Nnadi called on the Hon. Minister to provide alternative location for the mechanics and spare parts dealers in the interest of safety and sanity in the Capital Territory.

Commenting further, Ambassador Nnadi stressed that the Mechanics and Spare Parts Dealers are strategic in the vehicle inspection process conducted by the Vehicle Inspection Officers, that ensures road worthiness of vehicles, which is a critical part of road traffic safety requirements.

“We are therefore appealing to the Hon. Minister to set up a committee comprising of the mandate agency, which is the Directorate of Road Traffic Services and other relevant authorities that will ensure effective relocation of all Motor Vehicle Related Trades and Services in FCT to the appropriate location as may be provided in the Master Plan of FCT” Nnadi concluded.
