The medical profession is first of all an ethical undertaking anchored on empathy, love, essentiality and professional accomplishment in terms of personal fulfilment. Infrastructural facilities, fixtures, regulation and provision of adequate remuneration are key to proper service delivery. Any time, there’s a gap in all the connecting links and apparent abdication of responsibilities on the government’s part, without corresponding conversation amongst the interest groups, communication breaks down and snowballs into trade disputes.

The unresolved dispute engenders drifting from the negotiation table and the affected professional often resort to suspension of services or strike action, to drive home their demands or point of contestation. Nigeria, like most developing countries which do not invest in manpower, infrastructure and capacity building, have witnessed an unending spate of disputes with professional bodies demanding better work conditions.
For instance, a few days ago, specifically on Monday 28 July, 2025, doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Lagos embarked on a three days warning strike, due to the salary-related dispute with the state government.
The strike was declared by the medical guild following what it describes as ‘illegal and disrespectful salary deductions” by the Lagos State Treasury Office.

Chairman of the medical guild, Dr. Japhet Olugbogi in a press conference held on Saturday, said the state government unilaterally slashed salaries of medical personnel in April 2025, which were initially reversed after intervention.
However, a second round of deduction in July breached the agreement between the guild and the government.
”Our members were visibly aggressive. While many called for an immediate strike, the officers committee chose the path of civility and pursued advocacy and engagement”, Olugbogi stated.
The medical accused the government of showing bad faith despite forming conciliation committee to resolve the issues. The strike has caused inconvenience to patients and their families, who are struggling to access medical care.
