The ICPC further revealed that a separate charge marked KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26 has been filed against El-Rufai and one Amadu Sule (LEDA) before a Kaduna State High Court. The counts in the state case include abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage, among others.
Both charges were filed by the ICPC on March 18, 2026. The date for arraignment in the Kaduna State High Court will be communicated later by the court. The commission reaffirmed that El-Rufai has been duly served with the charges and reiterated its commitment to due process and the rule of law.

Background to Detention El-Rufai was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16, 2026, granted bail on February 18, but was immediately rearrested by the ICPC. He has remained in ICPC custody since then.
The planned arraignment follows sustained pressure from stakeholders, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) the party El-Rufai joined after leaving the APC which demanded his immediate release or formal arraignment, describing his prolonged detention without charges as a violation of constitutional rights.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) also condemned the detention, while members of El-Rufai’s family expressed concern over what they called his extended custody without trial.
The former governor, who served as Kaduna State Governor from 2015 to 2023 and briefly as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has consistently described the cases against him as politically motivated persecution linked to his criticism of the current administration and his defection to the ADC.
