Nollywood actress and producer Ini Edo has responded to backlash from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of her latest film, A Very Dirty Christmas, insisting there was no intention to disrespect Christianity or undermine the sacredness of the Christmas season.
In a detailed statement released on Thursday night, December 18, 2025, the devout Christian actress explained that the title is metaphorical, designed to provoke thought and reflect the complexities of human experiences, including contrasts between joy and struggle during the festive period.
“I am a devout Christian. My faith is deeply personal to me, and it guides my values, my choices, and my life,” Edo said. “I would never knowingly create or associate myself with any work that seeks to misrepresent, disrespect, or undermine my religion or the essence of Christmas.”
She emphasised: “At no time was there any intention to demean, ridicule, or dishonour Christianity, the Christmas season, or the values held dear by millions of Nigerians. The title of the film is metaphorical, reflecting the story being told and the realities explored within it.”

Edo acknowledged CAN’s concerns, stating: “I acknowledge the concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and I respect the important role faith plays in our society.” She noted that the film had been publicly promoted with the title for weeks without prior objections and received full approvals from regulatory bodies like the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and Nigerian Copyright Commission.
Inviting the public to view the movie, she added: “I invite everyone to go to cinemas across Nigeria to watch A Very Dirty Christmas for themselves. See the story, feel the message, and judge it in its proper context.”
The controversy began when CAN, in a statement by its President Archbishop Daniel Okoh on December 17, described the title as “offensive and disrespectful,” arguing that associating “dirty” with Christmas diminishes its spiritual significance as a season of purity, peace, love, and redemption. CAN called for sensitivity, questioned NFVCB’s approval, and urged stakeholders to address the issue.
The NFVCB later confirmed it was engaging the producers to modify the title in response to public concerns.
A Very Dirty Christmas, directed by Akay Mason, was released in cinemas nationwide on December 16, 2025.
