Iran has denied any involvement in an alleged plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump, a scheme supposedly uncovered by U.S. intelligence agencies. The motive behind the assassination attempt by Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was later fatally shot by a secret service sniper, remains unclear.
A report by CNN claimed that U.S. intelligence first learned of a supposed Iranian-connected plot aimed at Trump several weeks ago. The former president was recently attacked at a rally in Pennsylvania, but no established connections between the assailant and Iran have been identified.
In a statement refuting these accusations, the Iranian Mission to the United Nations labeled them as “unsubstantiated and malicious.” They further asserted that from Iran’s perspective, Trump is guilty of criminal activity for ordering the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani and should face legal repercussions.
Anthony Guglielmi, Secret Service Communications Chief, when asked for comment mentioned that they are constantly assessing potential threats and adjusting resources accordingly. He refrained from commenting on specific threat information but assured that all threats are taken seriously.
Former President Trump and key administration officials like ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have been repeatedly threatened by Iranian officials due to their role in Qassem Soleimani’s death. Soleimani was a significant military figure in Iran who played a crucial part in organizing Shiite militias during the Iraq War.
The motive behind Thomas Matthew Crooks’ assassination attempt remains unclear. The 20-year-old suspect had rigged his vehicle with remotely detonatable explosives before parking it near the rally. Despite investigations, no clear links to political motives or connections with Iran have been found in his online presence.
Crooks had a minimal social media presence; however, he was found to have an account on Discord. The platform stated that the account was rarely used and there’s no evidence of it being used for planning the incident or discussing his political views.
