Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), a former Ogun State Local Government Chairman has confirmed.
The revelation came on Thursday, January 23, 2026, when ex-LG chair Hon. Afolabi Oluwaseun (APC) announced that Prof. Obasanjo registered with the party at her ward in Abeokuta North Local Government Area.
Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, Hon. Oluwaseun said: “Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo has formally joined the APC. She completed her registration today and received her membership card. This is a big boost for our party in Ogun State and the South-West. Her experience, pedigree, and commitment to development will strengthen our ranks.”
Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, a medical doctor, former Ogun Central Senator (2007–2011), and public health expert, had been politically independent in recent years after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Her father, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has been openly critical of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC-led administration.
While Iyabo has not yet issued a public statement, sources close to her say the move is “strategic and personal,” driven by a desire to contribute to national development from within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The defection has sparked intense speculation: Some believe it signals a possible reconciliation between the Obasanjo political family and Tinubu.
Others see it as Iyabo positioning herself for a major role potentially a senatorial return, governorship ambition, or even higher office in 2027.
The APC in Ogun State welcomed the development, describing Prof. Obasanjo as “a valuable asset with integrity, intellect, and grassroots appeal.”
PDP leaders in the state have yet to respond, but the move is already being viewed as a significant political blow to the opposition in Ogun.
