Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has revealed he does not envision himself as a coach after hanging up his boots, instead expressing a strong preference for becoming a club owner and developing talent from the grassroots level.

In an interview with Argentine streaming channel Luzu TV published on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the 38-year-old eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said: “I don’t see myself as a coach. I like the idea of being a manager, but I’d prefer to be an owner. I’d like to have my own club, start from the bottom and make it grow to give kids the opportunity to develop and achieve something important. If I had to choose, that’s what would appeal to me most.”

Messi, who recently extended his contract with Inter Miami through 2028, already holds a future minority ownership stake in the MLS club as part of his deal. He is expected to exercise this option upon retirement, allowing him influence over sporting and commercial decisions long-term.

The Argentine has begun dipping into ownership, partnering with longtime teammate Luis Suárez to co-own Uruguayan fourth-division side Deportivo LSM. He also launched the Messi Cup, an under-16 youth tournament held in Miami last December.

Messi’s comments come as he prepares for a busy 2026, including defending Argentina’s World Cup title and aiming for more silverware with reigning MLS Cup champions Inter Miami.
