Manchester United have officially appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, the club announced on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
The former United midfielder and long-serving coach steps in following the sacking of Ruben Amorim last week and the brief interim stint of Darren Fletcher, who oversaw the FA Cup exit to Brighton.
Carrick, 44, who enjoyed a highly successful playing career at Old Trafford (winning five Premier League titles, a Champions League, and multiple domestic cups), has been on the coaching staff since 2017. He previously served as interim manager in November 2021, guiding the team to three wins from three matches before Ralf Rangnick took over.
In a club statement, Manchester United said: “Michael Carrick has been appointed interim manager until the end of the 2025-26 season. His deep understanding of the club, winning mentality, and proven track record make him the ideal candidate to steady the ship during this challenging period.”

Carrick addressed the appointment on the club’s official channels: “This club means everything to me. I know the standards expected and the passion of our supporters. We will fight for every point in the Premier League and Europa League. The players are talented, and together we will give everything to turn this season around.”
His first match in charge will be the Premier League clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in the highly anticipated Manchester derby.
United currently sit 14th in the Premier League with 25 points from 21 games, 18 points off the top four.
